Strokes, Interpol, Arctic Monkeys – Where Rock Revival Meets Indie Rock

Punk, New Wave, Alternative, Grunge, Post-Punk Revival, Indie,… what’s a person to do?

As I mentioned elsewhere in this blog, after the death of Kurt Cobain and the decline of Grunge I lost touch with what was happening with music for a few years.  This was the late 90s and early 2000s.  I had kids and a busy job and music wasn’t on the internet yet. What I missed is often referred to as Post-Punk Revival or Garage Rock Revival.  What these labels are trying to tell us is that these are bands following in the footsteps of great rock bands before them and with a sound that people who are familiar with some of the “alt” movements of the past are going to understand.

Simply put, the kids of the late 90s and and early 2000s love this stuff and with good reason.  There is undeniable talent here.  But all three have suffered through hiatus and comeback and now seem to be trying to re-revive a sound that I’m not sure is going to happen.

So what’s going on here?  Every generation of kids has their own music.  The later 2000s and 2010s are not the same as the late 90s and the early 2000s.  Music moves on.  These bands all still make great music; but I’m not sure that the one label – “Indie Rock” fits everything.  These guys are good old fashioned rock and roll evolved through various “waves” and still rocking on.  I’m including them here – but I think Indie today isn’t what Indie was then – just a few short years ago.
